WELCOME TO OUR OPEN HOUSE!! MAGSIG MIDDLE SCHOOL 2015

FROM THE PRINCIPAL.......  My name is Mrs. Stacey Westendorf and my email is stacey.westendorf@centerville.k12.oh.usstacey.westendorf@centerville.k12.oh.us.  I regularly communicate key informational items via our mailing list. Are you getting my messages? If not, please sign up at www.centerville.k12.oh.us. Click on “Schools”, then “Magsig”, then follow the instructions on the right side of the screen. www.centerville.k12.oh.us  The website calendar is a great resource. It can be found at the above site as well.  Do you know the location of your blue HAC letter?? This letter contains the user id and password you will use to monitor you child’s grades. Please keep it in a safe place.  DRESS CODE: No tank tops, spaghetti straps, etc. Shoulders must be covered. No shirts depicting drugs, alcohol or violence. Some “slogans” on shirts are not school appropriate. Please, please watch the length of the young ladies shorts.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL.......  CELL PHONES/IPODS: Are to be kept turned off and in students’ lockers for the course of the school day. If you have an emergency and need to contact your child during the school day please call the office and we will get a message to your child.  OFFICE DELIVERIES: Please remember that every time you bring in something for your child we have to buzz you in, then interrupt a classroom to let the child know. Sometimes experiencing the natural consequences of forgetting something can be a great learning experience for a child.  COLLABORATION WITH SRO: Officer Jim Stephenson of CPD is assigned to our building as a School Resource Officer. He is asked to investigate and assist with a variety of student issues that have legal implications; such as theft, truancy, physical altercations, online/phone/text harassment, etc. You can contact him at Jim.Stephenson@centerville.k12.oh.us.Jim.Stephenson@centerville.k12.oh.us

FROM THE OFFICE.....  The Secretary’s name is Mrs. Dawn Elliott and her email is dawn.elliott@centerville.k12.oh.us dawn.elliott@centerville.k12.oh.us  The Office Aide’s name is Mrs. Patti Arndts and her email is patti.arndts@centerville.k12.oh.us patti.arndts@centerville.k12.oh.us  Absences = If your child is sick, or cannot come to school for any reason such as travel, funeral, all day doctor appointments, etc., please call the office by 8:30 am on the day of the absence. We then have a reason for the absence. If your child is absent and we have NOT heard from you, we will call you mid-morning to make sure you are aware that your child is NOT here. These are security precautions that we take to make sure everyone is accounted for. Please do not email the teachers- they aren’t responsible for the official attendance- the office keeps that data.

FROM THE OFFICE.....  Tardies = If your child is going to be tardy, the same principle applies, please call us to let us know that your child will be late. If you can’t call, please write a note and send it in with your child so that he or she will be “excused” when they come to the office to sign in. If this does not occur, the child will have three days to bring in a note or have a tardy paper signed by the parent, excusing or not excusing the tardy. If this does not happen, they will get a referral. Three referrals will result in an after school detention.  Early Dismissals = Again, if you know ahead of time that you have to pick up your child early from school, please write a note, or call to let us know. YOU MUST ALWAYS COME INTO THE OFFICE TO SIGN OUT YOUR CHILD! ! ! We then call them from the class they are in. We do not allow students to come early to the office to wait, nor are they allowed to wait by the front door for parents.

FROM THE OFFICE.....  Travel with Parents = Although we don’t encourage students to be out for vacations, this sometimes happens. Please send a note in with your child at least a few days before the absence; we will mark them excused for the days absent and will make a copy that they can take around to all their teachers to get their work ahead of time.  Access to the Building = Our custodians are here until 10:30 pm... The building is typically open until 8:00 pm or so. If your child forgets something in his or her locker feel free to come back to school. The front door will be locked- try the gym door or the back cafeteria door.  Miscellaneous Items= We invite you to call or email if you have any questions or concerns about school policy. It is always best to be proactive so that students, parents, and staff have a positive experience here at Magsig.

FROM THE COUNSELOR.....  My name is Seth Rings and my email is seth.rings@centerville.k12.oh.usseth.rings@centerville.k12.oh.us  My role here at Magsig is to lead, support and counsel our students in three main areas: social and emotional issues, academic support and career development.  I also collaborate with teachers, staff, parents, and guardians to help your kids be the best students they can be while they are here in middle school.  I work with students in a variety of settings: the classroom, individual appointments, and large group assemblies. We discuss everything from organization to bullying and study skills to divorce (and everything in between).

FROM THE COUNSELOR.....  This fall I will be covering three different topics with each of our grade levels:  6 th Grade – Making the Most out of Middle School  7 th Grade – Bully Bystanders: You Can Make a Difference  8 th Grade – Me and My “500 Friends”: Staying Safe on Social Networks  Feel free to contact me should you ever have any questions or concerns.

FROM THE NURSE.....  It is Centerville City Schools and Ohio State Law regulations that any student taking medication during school hours must have written permission from a doctor and a parent. The clinic does not stock any medications. Students may not carry medication to and from school.  Please be advised that students should not come to school if they have a fever of 100 degrees or higher, or have vomited, had diarrhea or had a fever within the last 24 hours.  If your student has an injury of some sort the best way to communicate that to us is to write a note or send an email to the office. We will make sure that the proper teachers are informed of the injury.

FROM THE ACADEMIC VOLUNTEER PROGRAM.....  Parent and community volunteers serve as a link between teachers and struggling students.  Last year at Magsig, 25 volunteers assisted 189 students, at the request of 20 teachers.  Academic volunteers tutor in Math, Foreign Language, Social Studies, Special Needs, Science, organizational skills, Orchestra and Chess Club.  Commitment can be as little as 35 minutes once a week over noon hour time slot.  Great way to catch a glimpse of your child’s middle school world.  We Need You! Please return the AVP volunteer form sent home in the first day packets or contact Magsig AVP coordinators Linda West and Serena Harrison for more information. serenaharrison.avp@gmail.com Serenaharrison.avp@gmail.com Serenaharrison.avp@gmail.com kellynlindawest@sbcglobal.net Serenaharrison.avp@gmail.comse Serenaharrison.avp@gmail.com

TONIGHT’S OPEN HOUSE.....  You will be walking an abbreviated version of your child’s schedule.  You do not report to lunch, chorus, orchestra, or study hall.  Related Arts classes (PE, Art, Health, Music) meet in the auditorium.  ELA class is twice as long as the others – report to the class first. If the teacher releases you early feel free to walk the building and visit our various informational/sales tables until the next class starts.  The intended audience for this open house is our parent population. If you have needed to bring our students and/or younger siblings to the Open House- they should travel from room to room with you and sit outside the classrooms in the hallways. They are not allowed to roam the building. Younger siblings can either sit outside the classroom or be in the room with you- depending on their age and what you would prefer.
