Conjunctions… There are two main types of conjunctions: co-ordinating conjunctions (e.g. and) link two words or phrases together as an equal pair James bought a bat and ball. Kylie is young but she can kick the ball hard.

Conjunctions… subordinating conjunctions (e.g. when) introduce a subordinate clause (tells us more about the meaning of the word). Everyone watches when Kyle does back-flips. Joe can’t practise kicking because he’s injured.

Basically… Conjunctions allow us to expand our thinking and make significant differences to writing leading on from Year 2.

Co-ordinating – and, so, but, or. The terrified dish cried. The train roared towards her. Subordinating – when, because, after, while.

Adverbials

An adverbial is a word or phrase that is used, like an adverb, to modify a verb or clause. Adverbials of time answer the question ‘when’. Adverbials of manner answer the question ‘how’ and those of place answer the questions ‘where’.
