Chapter 14 – Lesson 2 Conflict Resolution Skills

Conflict Resolution: The process of ending a conflict by cooperating and problem solving together. Resolving conflict in a nonviolent way involves the 3 R’s: 1.Respect 2.Rights 3.Responsibility

Tolerance: Accepting others’ differences and allowing them to be who they are without expressing disapproval. Negotiation: A process in which compromise is used to reach agreement.

Mediation: A process in which specially trained people help others to resolve their conflicts peacefully. Peer Mediators – students trained to help others students in conflict find fair ways to settle their differences.

Effective Mediation Mediation has well-defined ground rules. It is up to the mediator to set these rules and describe them to both sides. Confidentiality – respecting the privacy of both parties and keeping details secret.

Concepts There are healthful and unhealthful ways to resolve conflicts. People can resolve their conflicts when there is mutual respect, open-mindedness, and acceptance of other people’s differences.
