Gerunds and infinitives: Changes in meaning Some verbs are followed by either a gerund or an infinitive with no change in meaning, for example: love, hate, can’t stand, like, prefer, begin, start, continue. I prefer to dance.I can’t stand to get up early. I prefer dancing.I can’t stand getting up early.
