1 Some verbs can be followed by an infinitive. Others, by a gerund.

2  Want  Hope  Promise  Decide  Would like  Refuse  Now, add 3 more verbs which are followed by an infinitive form.

3  Like  Love  Hate  Practise  Not mind  Suggest  Now add 3 more verbs which are typically followed by a gerund

4  And there’s NO change in meaning.  These verbs are:  Begin  Continue  Intend  Start  It started raining/to rain.

5  With the verbs like, love, prefer, hate, to- infinitive generally refers to a future action, or an special occasion:  I like to visit my grandparents in Christmas. (but now it’s June)  With the gerund, the –ing orm refers to an action that is generally true or currently in progress:  I like visiting my grandparents in December. (it’s sth I always enjoy, and it’s December!)

6  -to infinitive: to remember sth, then do it.  “I remembered to get your favourite cheesecake. (I got it for your birthday…)  -ing: to do sth and then remember it later.  “Do you remember locking the back door? If you don’t, we should go back home to check!”  I clearly remember putting on my scarf. But now I don’t know where I left it!”

7  -to infinitive: to forget about sth so you don’t do it! “Don’t get angry with me: I forgot to bring the books.” -ing: to do sth and then forget (or not) it later. “I will never forget going to shopping with you when we were in Miami.” “ I sometimes forget telling my students to do some homework. ( I give them homework and then I forget I did, so the next class I don’t ask for it!!)

8  -to infinitive: to make an effort to do sth difficult:  “ I’ve been trying to lose weight for ages. “  -ing: to do sth and then see waht happens, experiment:  “ Have you tried eating fruit and vegetables in order to lose weight?  Try+ gerund is often used for giving advice

9  -to infinitive: to stop sth in order to do sth else (purpose)  “They went shopping all day and stopped to have a cup of coffee.”  -ing: to no longer do sth, finish.  “Why don’t you stop asking silly questions?”  “He stopped eating junk food when he realised how bad it was for his health.”
