Work and Simple Machines. Work is the use of force to move an object some distance. Work is done only when an object that is being pushed or pulled actually.
Work, Machines, and Energy. Work and Power  Work is done if (1) an object moves, and (2) if a force acts in the same direction that the object moves.
Physics! Simple Machines!. What is work? When you exert a force on an object that causes it to move some distance Work=Force x Distance.
Forces/Motion. Force A push or a pull Speed The distance an object moves in a given amount of time.

Presentation transcript:

Add to Pulley Lab/notes in your journal Mechanical Advantage of pulleys – More pulleys = more support (divides the rope into more sections to support the load) More support = less force (but I have to pull on more rope = more distance)

Inclined Planes Steeper = more force (because there is less support against gravity of the load) Shallow (gradual or less steep) = less force (because there is more support against gravity of the load) gravity Distance Less support/ more force More support/less force

Question 4 The graph shows the speed of a car traveling over a 12 second period on a flat surface. In the first 6 seconds shown on the graph, the car is:

Simple Machines A single fixed pulley changes the direction of motion of an object only – you still have to use the same amount of force to lift the object. The mechanical advantage of a machine means using the machine requires a smaller force to move an object, but the distance increases to keep the amount of work the same. A wedge, screw, and inclined plane are types of ramps. For a single movable pulley, the input force is always less than the output force – it has a mechanical advantage. An inclined plane uses less force over a greater distance to decrease the amount of force needed to do work (mechanical advantage). As the length of an inclined plane is increased, the force decreases.
