1 Simple Machines Inclined Planes Pulleys

2 How do simple machines make work easier for us?

3 Inclined Plane: An inclined plane is a simple ramp
Inclined Plane: An inclined plane is a simple ramp. It decreases the amount of force that is exerted to lift an object. As an inclined plane increases in length, the amount of force necessary to move an object a certain height decreases.

4 Pulley: A device consisting of a wheel over which a rope or chain is pulled in order to lift heavy objects. pulleys reduce the amount of force that must be exerted and/or change the direction of force exerted on an object in order to move it.

5 Pulley System: A pulley system consists of a rope attached to a wheel and a load. Pulleys distribute the weight of the load over different sections of the rope. They reduce the force needed to lift the load by increasing the distance the load is moved.

6 Which pulley system will reduce the amount of force needed the most?

7 If Each pulley is lifting 60 N how much force would you need to apply on each to lift the load?
1. 2.

8 Simple machines Questions
Simple machines Questions *You must write the question and answer this in your science notebook* Copy the following terms/definitions in your notebook. You must include a picture of the term as well. (Simple Machines, Inclined Plane, Pulley, and Pulley System). How do inclined planes reduce the amount of force required to move an object? How do pulleys work to reduce the amount of force required to lift a load? How is an object's mass related to the amount of force needed to move it? Give 3 examples of how inclined planes and pulleys can be used in real life. Which pictures below would be classified as an inclined plane or a pulley? The road is 12 miles long, and the mountain is 2 miles high. What is the mechanical advantage of the inclined plane?

9 Simple Machines Vocabulary
SIMPLE MACHINE: DEVICES USED TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF FORCE NEEDED TO MOVE AN OBJECT.

10 INCLINED PLANES

11 Mechanical Advantage = Output Force/Input Force
The mechanical advantage of a machine is the ratio of the output force to the input force. The input force is the force applied to the machine. It is how hard one must push or pull. The output force is the force the machine exerts on the object being moved. Mechanical Advantage = Output Force/Input Force What is the mechanical advantage of a pulley system that can lift a bicycle weighing 150 N when the student exerts a force of 80 N?
