Vocabulary for Simple Machines Study these terms for your vocabulary test.

Force force- a push that moves an object away or a pull that moves an object near

Friction friction- a force that slows or stops motion between two surfaces that are touching

Gravity gravity- the force that pulls bodies or objects toward other bodies or objects

Inclined Plane inclined plane- a simple machine made up of a slanted surface

Lever lever- a simple machine made up of a stiff bar that moves freely around a fixed point

Motion motion- a change in an object’s position as compared to objects around it

Position position- an object’s location, or place

Pulley pulley- a simple machine made up of a rope fitted around the rim of a fixed wheel

Screw screw- a simple machine made up of an inclined plane wrapped around a column

Simple Machine simple machine- a device that changes a force

Speed speed- a measure of the distance an object travels in a certain amount of time

Velocity velocity- a measure of speed in a certain direction

Wedge wedge- a simple machine made up of two inclined planes

Wheel and Axle wheel and axle- a simple machine made up of two cylinders that turn on the same axis
