THE TUSKEGEE SYPHILIS STUDY EFFECT ON CURRENT RESEARCH

ETHICAL PROBLEMS CURRENT RESEARCHERS ARE FACING Researchers must now: Consider what is right and wrong Ask : Will any physical harm be caused to the subject(s)? Ask: Will any psychological harm be caused? Obtain conformed consent from each participant Have no form of deception, unless it is completely unavoidable Allow all subjects the right to withdraw from the study Get research projects approved by an Institutional Review Board (IRB) in institutions receiving federal funds. The infamous mistrust of government and health care systems for African Americans.

RESULTS OF EXPOSING THE PROBLEM Harmful acts such as this one will less likely be conducted. The families of participants received a $10,000,000 lawsuit An International Review Board (IRB) would prevent such an unethical study from taking place. The IRB has set criteria to minimize risk of participants such as: informed consent, right to withdraw, privacy, and confidentiality. Guidelines must also be followed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for research with human subjects.

COULD THIS STUDY BE CONDUCTED ETHICALLY IF REVISED? Because the intent of the study was never just from the beginning, this study could not be conducted ethically. This moral injustice done by the government not only deceived the subjects beyond belief but also denied treatment of such a deadly disease. As a result, many people died and many infants were born with the disease.
