Metric Studio Cognos 8 BI

Objectives  In this module, we will examine:  Concepts and Overview  An Introduction to Metric Studio  Cognos 8 BI Integration  Hosting Multiple Applications  Flexible Calendars  Navigation Features  Diagrams  Graphs and Charts  Activity Monitoring  Watch Lists  Creating a Metric Application

Metric Concepts and Overview

METRICS ANSWER KEY QUESTIONS  Status Overview  How am I doing?  Details  When has this happened before?  What drives this metric?  What could be causing the problems?  What other metrics and objectives does this affect?  What do I have to do about it?  Who else is included in the decisions?  Where does the data come from?

Scorecarding Basics  Scorecard:  a collection of performance metrics designed to reflect the strategic goals of a unit in an organization.  Metric:  a measurement which has a target value; an actual value and an owner who is responsible for the performance of that metric. A metric is related to a strategic goal.  Metric Type:  defines the behavior of a collection of metrics; typically, identifies one aspect of performance (such as revenue or expenses)  defined by a performance pattern, for example:  revenue has a performance pattern of “above target is positive”; you want revenue to be higher than target  expenses has a performance pattern of “below target is positive”; you want expenses to be lower than target  inventory has a performance pattern of “on target is positive”; you want just the right amount of inventory, not too high and not too low.

Status and Score  What is a status?  A status is what we are accustomed to seeing as a green, red or yellow visual indicator to tell us whether or not we are on target.  Status: is based on a comparison between an actual and a target value. A tolerance (yellow) allows you to set a buffer area when the target has only just been missed Scores are point based: 100% Target | 120% Actual | 10% tolerance 10% tolerance = one tolerance = 1 point. Score in this example is 2 SCORE = (Actual – Target)/(absolute)tolerance (We use absolute values because we don’t want a negative tolerance. Ex: absolute = -950, target = -1000, tolerance = 10% or –100. This equals 50 / 100 = 0.5, which is just a bit into the green.)

Introduction

Cognos 8 Metric Store  Cognos Metric Studio still requires a metric store that is separate from the Cognos 8 content store.  The metric store is initialized within Cognos 8 through the New Metric Package Wizard  First create a database in either:  SQL Server  Oracle  DB2  Initialize the metric store  Tables are added similar to cmm_install in 2.2

Metric Packages  A metric package is a Cognos Connection representation of a Metric Studio application.  A metric package contains:  connection information  Reports  metric management tasks for that application.  As part of the Metric Package Process – you will either:  perform metric store initialization  perform metric store upgrade  use an existing metric store sharing it with another metric package

End Result: Multiple Metric Studio Applications  Host multiple Metric Studio applications in single Metric Studio installation.  Supports:  multiple discrete user communities  multiple scorecard hierarchies, metric type sets & calendars  development and rollout from same server

Administer Metric Applications in Cognos Connection  Administration tasks formerly on the CMM 2.2 Service Control Page are available in the Metric Maintenance folder in each package  Import to Staging  Import from Staging  Export  Synchronize Users with external namespaces  NEW – Update Search Engine Index

Importing 2.2 Data  Data can be exported to flat file and imported  Export data from the CMM 2.2 Service Control Page  Set the Cognos 8 Metric Studio Import Source to import 2.2 files  Use the Tools ->Import Sources menu item

Demo  Create a new Metric Package  Create a new Metric Store  Change data load settings  Load data from flat files into Cognos Metric Studio  Introduction to Metric Maintenance

Metric Studio

Release Themes  Cognos 8 Integration  Simplified deployment, management, and usage  Feature Flexibility  High-value customer requested enhancements  Focus on flexibility and customization  Advanced Performance Management  Robust support for Objectives, Projects and Countermeasures  Interactive permission-based scorecard management

Cognos 8 Integration  Enterprise Directory Integration  Cognos 8 BI Reporting Model  Select Cognos 8 BI Reports from Content Manager  Shared Application Server Tier  Scale-out, management  Common Data Management Task Infrastructure  Cognos Connection  Job scheduling and history

Metric Maintenance Tasks  Create tasks to run now or schedule for later within Cognos Connection:  New Metric Maintenance wizard - Schedule extract execution in Cognos Connection  New Metrics Export Wizard – enhanced exporting functionality  New Metric Import From Files Wizard – improved control over imports  Create a new Metric Package from Cognos Connection Toolbar

Cognos 8 Integration (cont’d) Metric Management Tasks Run from Cognos Connection Select Reports from Cognos Connection to add to Metric Studio objects

Cognos 8 BI Reporting Model  Custom Cognos 8 BI reporting:  Briefing books  Analysis reports  Custom views of metric data embedded in the Report tab  Ad hoc querying  Printer-friendly output using Cognos 8 technologies

Integrated Content Management  Single interface for performance monitoring and content management  Edit metric values in place  Add, Delete, Edit scorecard structure in place:  Scorecards  Metrics  Reports, Impact Relationships, Diagrams etc.  Permissions-based

Flexible Calendar  More than 4 levels  Improved support for “daily” time grain  Mix of weeks, months, quarters  Latest data view  Improved navigation

New Navigation Features  Tabbed Interface  Scorecards  Metric Types  Accountability  Groups  Search Scorecards, Metrics  Configurable Navigation Options

Redesigned Diagram Creation  Diagram Templates  Create one diagram and apply it to hundreds of scorecards  Improved Editing Interface  SVG no longer required  More Supported Objects  Allow the creation of complex diagrams such as strategy map entirely in Metric Studio  Text, geometric objects  Objectives  Groups

Enhanced Diagram Browsing  Configurable navigation paths  Expandable Impact Diagrams  Detailed information available through mouse over

Diagram Creation and Editing

Improved Graphing & Charting  Redesigned to utilize the Cognos 8 BI graphics engine  Display of multiple benchmarks  Mix of line and bar charts  Thumbnail of trend chart  Navigation through time periods and levels

Objective & Group Status

Activity Monitoring  Enter and track activities in Metric Studio  Projects:  Long term strategic actions associated with scorecards or objectives  Actions:  Immediate actions undertaken to correct a specific metric status  Track  Start Date, Planned Start, Planned End Date, Expected End Date, Actual End Date  Status & Completion Percentage  Affected Metrics, Objectives or Scorecards  Owner, Goal, Method and other details

Project Creation and Activity Monitoring

Metric Studio Watch List  Personalized view of metrics (per user logged in)  toggle on\off to notify users of status indicator change or updates of comments  Supports single or multiple messages

Metric Studio Watch List (cont’d)  Import of Metric Studio Watch List portlet  Allows more enhanced integration with Cognos Connection  Editable properties supporting multiple packages

Summary  In this module, we examined:  Concepts and Overview  An Introduction to Metric Studio  Cognos 8 BI Integration  Hosting Multiple Applications  Flexible Calendars  Navigation Features  Diagrams  Graphs and Charts  Activity Monitoring  Watch Lists  Creating a Metric Application
