Adult Maths Sessions Addition and Subtraction methods

Addition Mental methods come first!  Mental recall of number bonds  = 10   + 3 = 10  = 100  19 +  = 20  Use near doubles  = double = 13

Addition- Reception and Y1

Addition- Year 2

Addition- Year 3 Moving into Year 3, children will begin to use larger numbers, using the number line method:

Addition- Year 3

Addition- Year 4 onwards

Subtraction Mental methods are the priority! Mental recall of subtraction facts: However teaching of this should demonstrate to the children the inverse of this is addition. 10 – 6 =  = =  = 2 Find a small difference by counting up 82 – 79 = 3 Counting on or back in repeated steps of 1, 10, 100, = 34 (by counting back in tens and then in ones) = 160 (by counting back in hundreds)

Subtraction- Reception & Yr 1

Subtraction- Year 2

Subtraction- Year 3

Subtraction- Year 4

Subtraction- Year 4 onwards Children should: be able to subtract numbers with different numbers of digits; be able to subtract two or more decimals with up to three digits and either one or two decimal places; know that decimal points should line up under each other. Be able to carry through 0‘s

Subtraction- Year 4 onwards Examples 2007 – – – 0.034
