1 Parent Workshop Mathematics

2 Aims: - To demonstrate how we teach Mathematics in Reception to Year 2 - To allow time for you to play with some of the resources we use - Give you some ideas of games/resources you can play with at home

3 Addition +

4 Reception ~ Using quantities & objects add two single-digit numbers
~ Count on back to find an answer

5 Using numicon demonstrate how you would solve the following question;
Year 1 ~ Addition with numbers up to 20 5 + 3 = Using numicon demonstrate how you would solve the following question; 7+4 = Focus on counting to 20 in yr1 although ch. Need to work with numbers up to 100 by the end of the yr. Pratically – moving the objects and being able to count on – 3 ….4, 5 etc Finding number bonds to a number – can you make number bonds to 8 using the nuimcon Using numicon to add simple additions – discuss bridging the 10 Numberline – counting on

6 Using base 10 demonstrate how you would solve the following question;
Year 2 ~ Addition with two digit numbers = Using base 10 demonstrate how you would solve the following question; = By counting on a ten and adding a one

7 Year 2 34 + 13 = ~ Addition with two digit numbers
Add by partitioning on a blank number line…. Practise 10 more lots before we move on to partitioning numbers Show on board

8 Year 2 ~ Addition with two digit numbers using column addition = T O 4 2 7 + Better as only adding 1 digit essentially - understanding needs to be secure of tens and ones Carrying the 10

9 Subtraction -

10 Reception ~ Using quantities & objects subtract two single-digit numbers ~ Count back to find an answer Numicon picture Real objects 1 less

11 Using numicon demonstrate how you would solve the following question;
Year 1 ~ Subtraction with numbers up to 20 Using numicon demonstrate how you would solve the following question; 8-3 = Numicon – how we use it – show on board Using concrete resources Taking physical resources away 13 – 5 =

12 Year 2 34 - 11 = ~ Subtraction with two digit numbers
By taking a ten away and taking a one away

13 Year 2 34 - 13 = ~ Subtraction with two digit numbers
Subtract by partitioning on a blank number line…. Practise 10 more lots before we move on to partitioning numbers Show on board

14 Year 2 ~Subtraction with two digit numbers using column subtraction = T O 4 2 7 - Better as only adding 1 digit essentially - understanding needs to be secure of tens and ones Carrying the 10

15 Multiplication x

16 Reception ~ Solve problems involving doubling
~ Solve practical problems involve combining groups of 2, 5 or 10 Numicon picture

17 Using numicon demonstrate how you would solve the following question;
Year 1 ~ Multiply using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher = Using numicon demonstrate how you would solve the following question; = Massive focus on doubles and halves and children need to be able to count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s Doubles + = 4

18 Using numicon demonstrate how you would solve the following question;
Year 2 ~ Multiply using arrays and repeated addition (2’s, 5’s & 10’s) Repeated addition – using concrete apparatus, numicon, on a number line & a bead bar Using numicon demonstrate how you would solve the following question; 5 x 3 = Commutativity - array 5 times 3 ~ = lots of 5 ~ 3 x 5 5 x 3 is the same as 3 x 5

19 Division ÷

20 Reception ~ Solve problems including halving & sharing
~ Solve practical problems that involve sharing groups of 2, 5, 10 into equal groups Numicon picture Practical object picture

21 Using objects demonstrate how you would solve the following question;
Year 1 ~ Grouping & sharing in small quantities 6 ÷ 2 = Using objects demonstrate how you would solve the following question; 8 ÷ 2 = Equal groups Sharing items during play & problem solving Show numicon – placing tiles of 2 on a 6 tile Number line - show Numicon Repeated subtraction on number line

22 Solve this problem on a number line: Share 8 sweets between 2 people.
Year 2 ~ Calculate mathematical statements for division & write them using division (÷) and equals (=) Sharing equally – children will develop their own ways of jotting Repeated subtraction – using a number line Solve this problem on a number line: Share 8 sweets between 2 people. 5 times 3 ~ = lots of 5 ~ 3 x 5
