UNIVERSALS OF CULTURE PROJECT Due Monday, May 18 th 2015

Task Your task is to use the universals of culture to showcase in a travel magazine what you have learned about one of the following modern day civilizations: Middle East (Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait) Egypt India China Italy Greece

SELECT SIX UNIVERSALS TO INFORM ME AND YOUR CLASSMATES WHAT LIFE IS LIKE IN THESE MODERN DAY SOCIETIES.

The Universals: Everybody does CUSTOMS – the traditions that people follow. Describe to me how these modern families celebrate holidays, birthdays, or other special days in their civilization. You choose FIVE more: GOVERNMENT – the rules that people make and follow ART – the ways that people express themselves ECONOMY – the ways that people make and spend money FOOD - the foods that people eat and the way it is prepared BELIEFS – the ways that people worship their god or gods COMMUNICATION – the ways that people share ideas with each other SOCIAL ORGANIZATION – the groups that people belong to VALUES – feelings or ideas that are important to people CONFLICT – disagreements among people RECREATION – things that people do in their spare time TECHNOLOGY – ways to make our lives easier

For each universal, you will need a written part One paragraph explaining the universal in 5 or more sentences. Support with personal examples Second paragraph explaining what it looks like in that society in 8 or more sentences. Consider the following: Who is involved, What is it, When does it happen, Where does it happen/occur, Why is it a custom An illustration/visual representing that universal. The illustration may be whatever you would like in order to show what that culture is about (i.e. drawing/ food/ music)

Example Paragraphs for Universal Paragraph 1 Every culture has their own unique customs. Customs are traditions that are a widely accepted way of behaving or doing something that is specific to a particular society, place, or time. For example, in my family we open one present on Christmas Eve. Another example, on Sundays during football season we have a family BBQ. Customs vary between different societies, places, or time periods. Paragraph 2 The second paragraph should be specific to your assigned modern day civilization/society. Include: examples and detailed description. Consider the following: Who is involved, What is it, When does it happen, Where does it happen/occur, Why is it a custom
