8 DEFINE THE TOPIC What is love? What is the difference between love and like? What does it mean to belong?

9 PERSONALIZE THE TOPIC Who do you love? Who loves you? Who do you like? How can you show someone you care about them?

10 CHALLENGE THE TOPIC: If someone wants to be liked or loved what can they choose to do? Why do people need love or need to feel they belong? Why do people join gangs? How can love or compassion help the world? How does hate hurt the world? How do animals show they love you?

11 ASSIGNMENT #5: Write a short story (2-3 paragraphs) about an adult in your life who loves someone you know (it could be you). –Write examples of how love connects them. Draw a picture, cut a picture out of a magazine, or get a photograph from home to illustrate your story. Bring your story & picture in to share with the class.

15 DEFINE THE TOPIC What is freedom? Who has freedom? Who does not have freedom?

16 PERSONALIZE THE TOPIC What are you free to do? When do you really feel free? Which of your freedoms would you miss most if you lost it?

17 CHALLENGE THE TOPIC: Students are required to come to school. –How do rules like this work with freedom? Why do people follow rules? What price would you be willing to pay for freedom?

18 ASSIGNMENT #6: On your paper, write down 4-6 expectations about how you want to be treated by your classmates. –State “rules” in positive terms, ex: –Instead of saying, “Don’t talk when others are talking.” Say, “Listen while someone else is talking.” In your groups, share expectations & create a list of behaviors that will help us get along better with each other. –Each person in the group must come up with at least one “rule” or desired class behavior. Each group will share their lists. Master list of expected behaviors will be created by merging all groups lists & selecting top 4-6 rules that class will agree to follow.

24 CHALLENGE THE TOPIC What rights should you expect from your peers in this class? Are the rights you expect from your peers the same as what you expect from the teacher? Are “rules” the same as “rights”? –Why or why not?

25 ASSIGNMENT #7 Think about all the rights we just talked about. On your paper, write down 4-6 rights you expect to have from your peers & teacher in this class. In your groups, share your lists & create a single list that you can all agree upon. Share lists in class to create a Student’s Rights document.
