Task Two

 Read a non-fiction, informational selection accompanied by one or more visual materials (charts, diagrams, graphs, etc.)  Answer ten (10) multiple choice questions about these.  Write an extended response (essay) based upon your analysis and interpretation of the information given (just as you would write any essay).

 Fully understand the prompt!!!  (task / audience / purpose)  Know what you are reading and what you are looking for.  Answer the multiple choice questions first— they may lead to you important information.

 Underline, circle, draw arrows to important information in the text.  Make special note of things you will want to quote directly (and be sure to have a few direct quotations!  Take a few notes, especially on things that will help you to organize and develop your essay cogently.  (Ask: How will this item help me to prove my point???)  Be sure to make connections between the text and the visual material(s)…YOU MUST REFER TO BOTH!

 As always…be organized  stick to your topic  refer back to your purpose  use TEXTUAL EVIDENCE

 Meaning (in-depth analysis, insightful connections)  Development (relevant and specific details, fully developed paragraphs)  Organization (stays focused, topic sentences/transitions)  Language (mature, sophisticated, precise, formal)  Conventions (spelling, grammar)

 As you practice writing your Task Two essay, use the hand-out as an organizational tool  Do your best – The essay counts towards your writing grade.  You will have 90 minutes to complete the essay.
