CASEY ROEHRICH

INTASC Standard, Description, and Rationale Standard #5: Application of Content The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspective to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem solving related to authentic local and global issues. Name of Artifact: Current Issues Project Date: April 16, 2013 Course: Education 101 Description: In this assignment I researched the issue on homeschooling. I gave a brief overview of what homeschooling is and then when into more detail on why students benefit from it and what disadvantages it has as well. Rationale: I chose Standard #5: Application of Content because teachers need to be aware of all the issues that take place in the educational world and this project helps me as a future teacher to become aware of the major ones.

Homeschooling Definition: Educating children at home rather that in a school; parents typically serve as the teachers. HISTORY Throughout history children have not always been taught in schools. Historically children were taught at home. Between the 1830’s and 1840’s there was a shift in which education went from being taught at home to public schools. This shift changed the face of American education because it put the responsibilities onto the school teachers instead of the parents. EDUCATIONAL ISSUES Although homeschooling has always been and option, within the last 20 years the debate on homeschooling students instead of sending them to a school has had an uproar of controversies.

Homeschooling PROSCONS 1. No one telling you what to do. 2. Provides individual attention and instruction. 2. Costly 3. Know what your child is learning when they learn it. 3. Committing many hours to instructing child. 4. Allows for more flexibility.4. Staying on top of record keeping and grading. 5. Better insulated from negative influence.5. Responsible for the social development of your child. 6. Finish school earlier/no long night.6.. Parents do not have time off/time to themselves during the day. 7. Create a weekly schedule that fits the family.7. Researching subject material, curriculum, and assessments is all on the parent. 8. Nurture teens through difficult years.8. RESPONSIBLE for the outcome of your child’s education.

Advantages and Disadvantages Typical school days are 7 hours. Homeschooling can be scheduled according to families schedule. Public schools provide supplies and resources. Homeschooling means you make your own resources. Public schools are less one on one. Being homeschooled you become more independent. Public schools have much better curriculum. Homeschooled means parents teach all subjects some of which are not their strengths.

Statistics

Questions How will the rising number of homeschoolers affect future teachers and the well being of our public education system? Do you think homeschooled students lack necessary skills needed for future experiences?
