2 INTASC STANDARD, DESCRIPTION AND RATIONALE Standard 2: Learning Differences- The teacher uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards. Name: Contemporary Issues in Education Date: November 13, 2013 Course: Education 101 Brief Description: For this project we did research on homeschooling advantages and disadvantages of it and the different types of home schooling. Rational: Standard two demonstrated different typed of learning. For this assignment we researched homeschooling being a different type of learning.

3 HISTORY OF HOMESCHOOLING For many years homeschooling was the norm in America Education consisted of learning the basic life skills In the 1960’s the Homeschooling movement begin In 1993 Homeschooling became legal in the United States

4 METHODOLOGY Homeschools use different methods and styles of teaching such as: Unit studies All-in-one curricula Student-paced learning Online education Autonomous learning Unschooling and natural learning Community resources

5 PROS AND CONS OF HOMESCHOOLING Pros Students have more educational freedom Less pressure for the student Students are able to accomplish more Parent and teacher are in constant communication Student may have a health issue Cons Lack of socialization It may not be affordable Lack of resources that are found in a class room Some colleges will not recognize a homeschoolers diploma Not as challenging

6 HOMESCHOOLING LAWS Every state has a different laws when it comes to homeschooling In the state of Indiana parents who choose to home educate their children should: Report their enrollment to the Indiana Department of Education Provide 180 days of instruction Show attendance records Provide instruction equivalent to that given in public schools Provide their own curriculum

7 STATISTICS AN ESTIMATED 1.1 MILLION STUDENTS IN THE U.S. ARE HOMESCHOOLED HOMES EDUCATION RATES HAVE INCREASED MORE THAN 7% PER YEAR FOR THE PAST FEW YEARS 77% OF THE STUDENTS WHO ARE HOMESCHOOLED ARE CAUCASIAN

8 DISCUSSION A survey asked parents why they would homeschool their children, the most common answers were; A better education could be offered at home They would be able to teach religion Some public schools have a poor learning environment Would you homeschool your child, why or why not ?
