…and The Scientific Method
Objective: You will be able to define what science is and list the five steps in the scientific method. You will be able to explain how we make observations You will use observations to answer a testable question Explain what science is Learn how to make observations Make observations about quality and quantity Use observations to answer a scientific question
What is science? Science is how we create knowledge of our world through observations. Knowledge (facts) that we can gain by answering testable questions
Guided Question How do we make observations? Using our five senses
Observations Describe objects and events Tools help us make measurements Measurements are quantitative observations
Quality and Quantity Quality= using only words Quantity= using numbers
Science Question What’s inside the mystery boxes?
Steps of the scientific method Problem Hypothesis Experiment Results Conclusion
Problem- A testable question Objective: Students will be able to identify and pose a testable question.
Hypothesis Objective: Students will develop a testable prediction attempting to answer the scientific problem (showing a cause and effect relationship)
Experiment Objective- Students will design and conduct a replicable experiment including safety precautions, materials, equipment, and procedural steps. Parts of the experiment: Safety Materials/equipment Procedural Steps
Results Objective: Students will organize data collected during an experiment (observations) and communicate their results through a visual representation (graph/diagram).
Conclusion Objective: Students will analyse and evaluate the overall outcome of the entire process discussing the accuracy of the hypothesis, results, other outcomes, sources of error, and real world connections (purpose of the experiment)
