2. What is the Scientific Method?
It is used by all scientists when trying to solve a problem or answer a question.
Has seven main steps
We will be using throughout
the school year!

3. Step One: Observation
Using your senses you observe the world around you to formulate a question.

4. Step Two: Purpose
After making observations and formulating a question then you should state exactly what you would like to find out.

5. Step Three: Create a Hypothesis
Based on your question come up with a hypothesis – needs to be testable!!!
Hypothesis: An educated
guess about what you
think will happen. Also
called a Prediction!
Needs to be an If…then statement.
If I water the plant 2 times a day, then it will grow 2 times as fast.

6. Step Four: Research
Before starting your experiments you should do some background research.
You can use the internet, books, an expert, anything that would help deepen your understanding.

7. Step Five: Experiment Figure out a way to test hypothesis
Want quantitative results
Quantitative: numbers, countable
This step is where scientific experiments take place

8. Step Six: Collect Data
While conducting your experiments you want to collect and record the data.
REMEMBER: you want
quantitative data
You want to repeat
experiment to confirm
results

9. Step Seven: State Conclusion
Go back and compare the results to your hypothesis.
State whether your hypothesis is correct or incorrect.
Try to explain your results
