Prep 2 Welcome to The Indus Family

Grade TEACHERS Ms Divya Mohandas Ms Yentl D’Silva Ms Ale Meyyappan

Prep 2

Prep 2 curriculum comprises of : Unit of Inquiry - UOI English Math Music Physical Education Art Dance Additional Languages Leadership

UOI in Prep 2 consists of six units which are as follows: How we express ourselves Who we are Where we are in place and time Sharing the planet How the world works How we organize ourselves Units of Inquiry

UOI Cont….. Each unit of inquiry lasts for 4-6 weeks. The unit is inquiry-based and incorporates many inputs from students based on their interests and needs. Students learn through guided inquiry. Students can bring any information related to the unit and share it with the whole class as a part of “show and tell” Field trips will be organized so as to help children relate what they learn to their daily lives.

Literacy in Prep 2 Oral communication (speaking and listening) Written communication (reading and writing) Visual communication (viewing and presenting) Language is taught through 3 strands:

Literacy Cont… Much of the language instruction will be integrated into the units of inquiry although some topics will remain stand-alones If you have any queries do feel free to talk to us.

Math In Prep 2 Math in prep 2 is organized into five main strands: Data handling Measurement Shape and space Pattern and Function Numbers

Math cont… Each strand has specific benchmarks which each child is expected to achieve. Students will be assessed on the achievements of these expectations. We also include mental math skills in children in a simple way, eg Pop quizes. Math is also integrated into the units of inquiry although some topics will be taught as stand- alones.

Specialist Subjects Prep 2 will also have Music, Dance, PE and Additional Languages.

Homework Policy Homework is a tool to help teach children personal responsibility, punctuality and self- discipline. Homework will be given everyday. Children are expected to complete the same and return the homework the next day. Home work will be given in English, Math and U.O.I. Sometimes work not completed in class may also have to be completed as additional homework.

Timetable A copy of the time table will be sent on the first day of school in the diaries. The time table can be subject to change. The time table is flexible due to the nature of inquiry. Swimming suits need to be brought in on the required day as according to the time table.

Class Routines and Procedures Every morning students are required to submit their diaries as this is a major means of communication between the parents and teachers. Classes begin at 9 am If any child wants to leave early from school, a note has to be written in the diary Please do avoid taking unnecessary holidays as it will affect the study of your child.

Discipline Students are required to maintain a certain level of discipline. At the start of the year, after a joint collaboration of the teachers and students, ESSENTIAL CLASSROOM AGREEMENTS are framed. Since students frame the agreements they decide the consequence if any of the agreements are broken by them.

Parent Interaction We completely believe that your involvement in our journey through this academic year is of high importance. We would be very grateful towards those who take part in our reading programmes and community services. There will be a small workshop for those who are interested in being a part of the reading programme.

Points of Importance The main source of communication between the parents and teachers is the school diary. We request parents to check the diaries everyday as all the important information, events, calendars, newsletters etc will be put into it. A monthly calendar and newsletter will be sent via at the beginning of every month. Please do fill up all the information asked for in the diaries. Kindly inform us about your child’s health status. Keep us posted with details like change of address phone numbers etc. Kindly refer to the diary for all the events coming up. We are always here for our children, so do feel free to communicate with us.

We look forward to a great, fun filled year ahead!

Looking forward to your kind support and cooperation. Thank You
