Syllabus Course Objectives –1. Be familiar with the basic concepts and diversity of animal life, and their ecology and evolution. –2. Have gained experience in organizing and studying problems utilizing the scientific method. –3. Have developed a respect for, and an appreciation of, animal life in its various forms. –4. Understand the taxonomy and classification of animals.

Evolution and Classification of Animals Animals probably evolved from marine protists, although no group of protists has been identified from an at-best sketchy fossil record for early animals. Cells in primitive animals show similarities to collared flagellates as well as pseudopodia producing amoeboid cells.

Today’s Animals Modern animals are classified into between 30 and 36 phyla All major modern phyla were present at the beginning of the Cambrian (590 MYA) Of the animal phyla, scientists consider nine major invertebrate phyla to be of major importance in therms of biological diversity
