CHANGING NEGATIVE SELF-TALK TO POSITIVE SELF-TALK

WHAT IS SELF-TALK? What we say to ourselves, both out loud and in our heads. Can be negative or positive Is most often sub-conscious

EXAMPLES I know this test is difficult, but I know I will succeed because I am intelligent and I work hard. Wow, I look so good today! I am just so sexy! Look out world! Oh my god! He/she is so hot! Oh I hope he/she talks to me. Why are my hands so sweaty? Oh no, why is my hair so ugly today? Why didn’t I dress nicer? Why am I so stupid? What is wrong with me? Everyone else is better than I am. I am afraid of failing. What will I do if I fail?

HOW DOES SELF-TALK AFFECT YOU? Research shows that thoughts affect your body and how you feel in many ways. Thoughts have been physically measured. Our brains learn through repetition and whatever we constantly repeat will be accepted by our brains. Your brain will find the answer to any question you ask it. Your thoughts affect everything you do. If you tell yourself “I will fail” you will act very differently than if you tell yourself “I will succeed”. Thoughts repeated become habits. Habits create your character and personality. Your thoughts create who you are.

WHAT IS THE INFLUENCE OF NEGATIVE SELF-TALK? It can make you feel sad, lack of confidence and self- pity It can make you feel alone It can make you afraid and angry It can make you feel like you have no control over your life It can lead to failure in class or at a job

YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR THOUGHTS YOU CAN DECIDE WHAT THOUGHTS TO ALLOW IN YOUR MIND JUST LIKE ANY HABIT, AT FIRST IT IS DIFFICULT, BUT WITH PRACTICE IT GETS EASIER AND EASIER GOOD NEWS!

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU PRACTICE CHANGING NEGATIVE SELF-TALK INTO POSITIVE SELF-TALK? You can become confident You can become happier You can give yourself more power, persistence and patience You can teach yourself to act any way you want You can teach yourself to be grateful, which is the truest wealth You can give yourself more energy You can change any habit You can design yourself exactly the way you want.

CHANGING NEGATIVE SELF-TALK TO POSITIVE SELF-TALK 1. Be aware of the negative Pay attention to what you are saying to yourself Pay attention to your body’s reactions to your thoughts Write down what’s going on in your thoughts 2.Change your beliefs Practice replacing negative thoughts with positive ones Write down how you would like to be and what you want to change Repeat positive thoughts with enthusiasm until they are true Use your body to change your thoughts (more on this later)

You can change anything about yourself, you just need to: 1)Decide 2)Practice a new habit 3)Pay attention 4)Adjust until you succeed

THE EASIEST WAY TO CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS Research shows that your body influences how you feel, your thoughts and how much energy you have mood-energy-thoughts php mood-energy-thoughts php Sitting up straight and walking tall and confident is good for energy and mood. It increases testosterone (the self-confidence hormone) and decreases cortisol (the stress hormone). The way you move and gesture will affect your mood and thoughts Smiling is the easiest way to change your state of mind. It sends a very clear signal to your mind. Don’t believe me or the scientists! Try it yourself!

WHO IS MORE CONFIDENT?
