1 B UILDING Y OUR S ELF E STEEM Self-Esteem Is the measure of how much you value, respect, and feel confident about yourself How you feel about yourself affects what you do Without high self-esteem it is very possible that you may not have the confidence to use refusal skills or stand up for yourself

3 D EVELOPMENT OF O NE ’ S S ELF -E STEEM Self Concept A measure of how one views oneself. Either positive or negative Positive Examples Interpreting Messages From Others People may make positive or negative comments towards you. These messages shape what you think about yourself, and how you think about yourself shapes your self- concept.

4 I MPROVING S ELF -E STEEM Use Positive Self Talk The things you say to yourself strongly influences your self- esteem and self-concept Live with Integrity Doing what one knows is right and honorable. When you have integrity you respect others, yourself, and your values. Choose Supportive Friends It is easier to treat yourself well if the people around you also speak well of you. Avoid disrespectful people, and maintain friendships with people who acknowledge your strengths and support your goals. Accept Yourself People with high self-esteem understand they are not perfect. They are very accepting of their strengths and weaknesses, yet they still see themselves as valuable.

5 C ONFLICT R ESOLUTION What is conflict resolution? Diffusing a situation through effective communication How can we do that? Be respectful, yet be assertive Use the steps of the GREAT decisions model Don’t call each other names or raise your voice Allow the other person time to speak Don’t make assumptions Focus on the real issue Be open to change and looked for shared interests Use “I” messages, not “U” messages Use listening skills and try to understand each other Scenarios?

6 C OMMUNICATION S TYLES Passive- Quiet in nature Goes with the flow Doesn’t speak up Aggressive- Dictator in nature Loud and demanding Possibly rude and pushy Assertive- Speaks up for themselves Not rude or pushy

7 COMMUNICATION GOOD COMMMUNICATION IS IMPORTANT Communication is a process through which 2 or more people exchange information. 1 Person sends the message and 1 or more people receive it. However if the message is not properly sent or is unclear, misunderstandings can arise. How can we improve or practice good communication techniques 1. Prevent misunderstandings. Ex. Whispering, talking with your back to someone, laughing when someone passes 2. Build Healthy Relationships. Ex. Refrain from put downs, teasing, or watch the tone in which you talk to people 3. Express yourself. Ex. Letting people know how you are feeling, don’t make people try to read your mind

9 LISTENING SKILLS Active Listening Let the speaker know you are listening and clarify anything that might be confusing. Do this by asking questions and by using expressions such as “I guess you must have felt…” “Tell me about…” “HMMMMM.” “Really?” “uh-huh” Give the speaker full attention, try not to think about what you are going to say next.

I concentrate on my strengths and work to improve my weaknesses 1= Never 2 = Occasionally 3 = Most of the time 4 = All of the time 19-24 – You show respect for yourself and others and probably have high self-esteem 10-18 – You probably have a healthy self-esteem but could improve the way you treat yourself and others 0-9 – you should make some major changes in the way you treat yourself and others
