Animals and Their Needs

What do animals need to survive? Food Water Shelter Air

Animals Need Air Animals need oxygen from the air to survive. Animals that live on land use lungs to get oxygen from the air. Insects us tiny holes in their bodies to get oxygen. Animals in the ocean get their oxygen from the water. What are some exceptions to the rule?

Animals Need Water All bodies of animals contain water. Everyday water leaves the body and it has to be replaced. Most animals get water from drinking. Other animals get water from the foods they eat.

Animals Need Food Food gives animals the materials they need to grow and stay healthy. Animals get energy from food. Animals cannot make their own food like plants can. Therefore, they get their food by eating animals or plant. Some animals get food from eating only plants. Some animals get food from eating only animals. Some animals get food from eating both.

Animals Need Shelter Most animals need a place to live or shelter. Shelters help protect animals from danger. Birds Ants Turtle Mice Beaver ›Build a nest ›Dig under the ground ›Uses his shell ›Hollow logs or under rocks ›Build dams and make a lodge

Review! Look and study these animals. Then tell me how each animal breathes, gets water, what it eats, and what it uses for shelter.

Days Activity: Pick three animals and draw them. Then tell me how each animal breathes, gets water, what it eats, and what it uses for shelter. Remember to use same colors as in notes when you are talking about different parts.
