1 Animals and Their Needs
An Animal’s How-To Guide To Surviving in a Habitat

2 What Needs Do You Think Animals Have?

3 What Needs do Animals Have?
Animals Need Oxygen Animals Need Water Animals Need Food Animals Need Shelter Where do Animals Meet Their Needs?

4 Animals Need Oxygen Land animals will get their oxygen from the air.
Most water animals will get their oxygen from the water. Water contains oxygen. Whales and dolphins are examples of water animals that must come up for air.

5 Animals Need Water All animals’ (and humans) bodies are made up of water. An animal’s body will lose water throughout the day and it must replenish itself. Water can come from food, puddles, lakes, rain, etc. Some animals use the water already stored in their bodies.

6 Animals Need Food Animals need food to grow, to live, and to have energy. Animals cannot make their own food. They get their food by eating plants and other animals. This is called a consumer. Animals use special physical adaptations for getting their food. (Elephant- trunk, Chameleon- long tongue)

7 Animals Need Shelter Protects them from the weather and other animals. It also gives the animal a place to rest. Where does a bird find shelter? Where does a snake find shelter?
