Bill of Rights Anti Federalists felt it was needed to protect individual’s rights IT CAME AFTER THE RATIFICATION OF THE CONSTITUTION!!! The Bill of Rights became the 1st 10 amendments/additions/changes, to the Constitution There are now a total of 27 amendments to the Constitution, including the outlaw of slavery, and the right for women to vote

1st Amendment This gives us our five basic freedoms These are freedoms of Religion, Assembly, Press, Petition, Speech (RAPPS) The Establishment Clause - government will not create or support any religion (separation of church and state)

2nd Amendment This gives us the right to bear arms This was originally meant to establish militias in times of war or invasion, but now it means that we are allowed to own and carry a handgun for self defense

3rd Amendment Protection from quartering of troops Can’t be forced to house military in your home This was put in the Bill of Rights as a direct response to the Quartering Act

Now troops live on military bases

4th Amendment Protection from unreasonable search and seizures This means that law enforcement cannot search your property without reasonable cause or a search warrant

5th Amendment Due Process, double jeopardy, self incrimination Basically means that you don’t have to admit to anything, and that you have the right to an attorney “I plead the FIFTH”

6th Amendment CRIMINAL: Right to a trial by a jury of your peers (12), speedy trial In any criminal case, you have the right for your case to be heard by a jury of 12 people

7th Amendment Civil Trial by Jury $$$$$$$ You can have a small dispute taken care of by a judge, but if its more than $20 you may request a jury trial

8th Amendment Prohibition of excessive bail, as well as cruel and unusual punishment You can only be punished according to the crime that you commit

9th Amendment Protection of individual rights not listed by the Bill of Rights General freedoms that we enjoy such as the right to travel freely

10th Amendment Powers of the states and people Similar to Federalism, which means that states have certain powers passed down or not listed
