Why this Rebirth? Crusades and Bubonic Plague caused death and destruction in Europe – Medieval society very rigid. – Chaos of the black death shook the foundations of society. Less people = higher demand for their specific labor and skills = emergence of paid workers Same wealth spread among fewer people

Why this rebirth? Cities reemerged and people moved to them Skilled middle class begins to form Emergence of Absolute Monarchs Fall of Constantinople –Byzantine scholars, Roman culture move back to Italy
