Kofa AVID Counselors All of the KHS counselors serve as support counselors for the AVID curriculum. We can be reached via phone or and are happy to assist in anyway possible.

What is AVID:  AVID is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. The mission of AVID is to assist all students, especially those who are typically least served, to succeed in a rigorous curriculum and to enroll in a four-year university. AVID wants to promote these goals for all students, both now and in the future.

AVID Objectives:  To provide students with academic instruction and other support in preparation for eligibility to enter a four year college or university.  To improve students' study skills and organizational skills  To increase students level of career awareness.

Counseling Goals Understand the mission of AVID Support the AVID Coordinator Identify and recruit potential AVID students Determine which strategies enhance student success Identify strategies to help AVID students determine career goals Develop ways to promote AVID students as school leaders Promote publicity efforts to recognize AVID student achievements Facilitate access for AVID students in Honors classes

Counselors can guide students to a brighter future

The Counselor should:  1.Be an AVID advocate.  2.Be ready to act as facilitator with teachers and others who are not comfortable with the methods and goals of the AVID program.  3.Support the AVID coordinator.  4.Be aware of cultural differences.  5.Counsel students on the obstacles to breaking stereotypes.  6.Be supportive of parents and participate in parent information sessions.  7.Join in AVID activities such as field trips to become better acquainted with the students and parents.  8.Evaluate the AVID program from a counseling point of view.

University Requirements:  English 4 credits  Math 4 credits  Science 3 credits  World History 1 cr.  US History 1 cr.  Govt/Econ. 1 cr.  Fine Arts 1 cr.  Foreign Lang 2 cr.  6 elective credits  Different Levels  Lab sciences only  Same Language

Standardized Testing  Student must pass all 3 portions of the AIMS test. ACT or SAT are also required for University.  College Board:  ACT:  SAT:  FAFSA:
