Do Now:  Make a list of ways that teens are pressured into becoming sexually active.

Ch. 19 Building Responsible Relationships Coping with Pressures Pg. 464

Pressures to Be Sexually Active  Internal Pressure: An impulse a person feels to engage in a behavior. 1.One feels to become sexually active comes from within oneself. 2.Can also come from desire for emotional intimacy. 3.Emotional intimacy and sexual feelings are two different things. 4.Being sexually active can actually complicate your life and create distance in your relationship with a person.

External Pressure:  External Pressure: is pressure a person feels from another person from a group to engage in a behavior. 1.Excellent sources of pressure to be sexually active include boyfriends, girlfriends, the media, or and your peers. 2.People who want you to go against your morals are usually not concerned with your well-being.

Activity  Pressure Skits! 1.Engage in use of alcohol or other drugs. 2.Pressure from a boyfriend or girlfriend to engage in sexual activity.

Setting Personal Limits:  When setting personal limits, you should commit not only to being abstinent but also to avoiding situations that could lead to sexual activity.  Tell your dating partner when you being dating that you have made a commitment to remain sexually abstinent.

Avoiding Pressure Situations: Identify situations that could lead to sexual activity. Avoid drinking alcohol or taking illegal drugs. Look for dating partners who share your values about abstinence. i.Dating in groups is a great way to avoid the pressures to be sexually active.

What type of different activities can you do in groups?

Refusing Verbally & Nonverbally  Verbal Refusals: 1.Clearly identify the problem. 2.State your thoughts and feelings about the problem. 3.State what you would like to have happen instead. 4.Explain the results if the change in plans is made. 5.Explain the results if the requested change in plans is not made.

Nonverbal Refusal: 1.Your body language should match what you are saying. 2.Stand up straight, and look the other person in the eyes when while talking. 3.If your date keeps pressuring you after the first time you say no, in that case keep restating your position or remove yourself from the situation. 4.If someone you are dating continues pressuring you to do something you don’t want to do, stop dating that person- they don’t have your best interest at heart.

Protective Factors:  Protective Factor: is anything that decreases the likelihood of someone engaging in a risky behavior.  Top 5 Protective Factors: 1.A close relationship with parents or guardians. 2.Being involved in school activities. 3.Good performance in school. 4.Practicing religious beliefs. 5.Being committed to being sexually abstinent.

Using the Figure-pg. 466  Practicing refusal responses ahead of time will help you deal with the pressures to be sexually active.

Risk Factors:  Alcohol and Drugs.  Dating older people.  Sexually active friends.  Previous sexual activity.

Showing Someone You Care:  There are many ways to show someone affection other than being sexually active.  Examples include making each other inexpensive gifts, spending time in conversation, just being together.  Support the person during good times and bad times.
