2 Who Influences You? Positive influences can encourage you to improve yourself or to do good. Negative influences can pressure you to do something that is unhealthy or dangerous. Peer pressure is a feeling that you should do something because that is what your friends want. 6 th Grade Peer Pressure

3 Types of Pressure Direct pressure is the result of someone trying to convince you to do something you normally wouldn’t do. Indirect pressure results from being swayed to do something because people you look up to are doing it. 6 th Grade Peer Pressure

5 Coping with Pressures 6 th Grade Peer Pressure Internal Pressure –Is an impulse a person feels to engage in a behavior. External Pressure –Is a pressure a person feels from another person or from a group to engage in a behavior.

6 Everybody has felt some type of pressure from his or her friends at one point or another. Make a list of 5 things that you can do to avoid peer pressure so that you will not be influenced in a negative way. Be prepared to share! 6 th Grade Peer Pressure

8 Refusal Skills Refusing Verbally and Nonverbally To get out of a pressure situation: 6 th Grade Clearly identify the problem. State your thoughts and feelings. Say what you would like to happen instead. Explain the results if the change in plans is made. Explain the results if the change in plans is not made.
