2 Do Now: What is a relationship?

3 Social Skills- Lesson 1 A Relationship is an emotional or social connection you have with another person or group. One requirement of a relationship is good communication. An important part of communication is to express yourself. There are many ways to express yourself or how you are feeling: Through spoken words, art, poetry, music, dance. Understanding others is an important part of communication. Being a good listener is part of being a good communicator. Active listening is hearing and thoughtfully responding as a person is speaking. Making eye contact and asking questions are part of being a good listener.

4 Social Skills-Lesson 1 Body language is a way of communicating
using facial expressions, hand gestures and posture. Your behavior is how you choose to respond or act. Character is based on good positive values and personal responsibility which help to build good strong relationships. Refusal skills help to avoid risky behavior. They are a way to say No to something.

5 Lesson 2-Sensitivity Skills
Empathy is sharing and understanding another person’s feelings. Tolerance is the ability to overlook differences and accept people for who they are.

6 Family Health- Lesson 3 Nurturing is providing care and other basic things a person needs to grow and develop. Family structure is the way a family is created or works together to nurture each other. (ex- mother , father, children) Family roles means each person has a responsibility in the family. Adults have most of the responsibilities. Children can help with younger brothers and sisters as well as cooking and cleaning. Changing roles- when new babies are added or when older children marry or go to college or mom goes to work. Responsibilities change.

7 FamilyHealth-Lesson 3 Family changes- Health problems-illnesses
Money problems- job loss, major expenses Relationship problems- separation and divorce Coping with problems- best way is to talk to someone you feel comfortable with-parent, grandparent, teacher, counselor

8 Influences on Teen Relationships-Lesson 4
Media- TV, movies, music, magazines are the media. TV shows and movies-violence, drugs, other bad influences? Music- what messages are sent? Real people- Your family- teach values, traditions, an how to get along with others. Role models- parents ,teachers and trusted adults influence how you treat others Peers- teach you how to interact with others your age. Positive and negative peer pressure.

9 Healthy Friendships-lesson 5
Building self-esteem Self-esteem- is how you feel about and value yourself as a person. Respect yourself Make healthy decisions Set and work for your goals Be respectful of others

10 Lesson 5-Healthy friendships
Friendship and Character Caring- Good friends care about each other and look out for each others well-being. Respect- They respect each other and their families. Dependability- Good friends are depenable and the keep their promises. Loyalty- Good friends stick with you through thick and thin. They do not quit on you Honesty- The tell the truth even when it is difficult to say or hear.

11 Lesson 5- Friendship Making New Friends- Joining clubs or groups, volunteering, talking to someone new after class. Friendship and Health- Choose your friends wisely. Support and help each other. Resolving unhealthy relationships- an unhealthy relationship is one that hurts you or goes against your values.

12 Teen Dating- Lesson 6 Dating- Is going out with people you find attractive and interesting. Group dating- is an easy way to go out with friends of the opposite sex. Showing affection- there are many ways to show affection: Giving someone a smile, Remembering a birthday Writing a card , note or letter Giving a small gift Going to watch a game or performance they are in Spending time together Holding hands

13 Lesson 6- Dating Being clear-
Say how you feel in a respectful way. Plan it before you say it. Respect the other person’s response. Back off if need be. Respect their wishes. Don’t touch if they do not want your affection.

14 Lesson 6- Dating Sexual abstinence- is the refusal to take part in sexual activity. It requires setting limits on what is permitted in the relationship. Talking to your parents about your feelings to help set limits. The benefits of sexual abstinence: Prevent unwanted pregnancy Prevent getting a sexually transmitted disease You will not be hurt emotionally from sexual involvement Shows that you care about you, and your future You have a plan to wait for the commitment of marriage to have sexual relations

15 Lesson 6- Dating Maintaining Abstinence-
Refusal skills- help you to maintain abstinence. Say no- with words and actions if anyone pressures you to do something you do not want to do. Avoid putting yourself into a risky situation. It is not grown up to have sexual activity. You are more grown up and independent to make a decision for your health and your future by choosing abstinence.
