CONDITIONALS BARBARA MELONI

REAL CONDITIONALS 1.WHAT DO WE USE THE ZERO CONDITIONAL FOR? 2.HOW DO WE FORM IT? 3.WHAT DO WE USE THE FIRST CONDITIONAL FOR? 4.HOW DO WE FORM IT?

THE ZERO CONDITIONAL WE USE THE ZERO CONDITIONAL FOR THINGS WHICH ARE ALWAYS TRUE. IT IS FORMED BY IF + PRESENT, PRESENT IF YOU MIX RED AND YELLOW, YOU GET ORANGE. IN THIS KIND OF CONDITIONAL WE OFTEN USE WHEN INSTEAD OF IF.

THE FIRST CONDITIONAL THE FIRST CONDITIONAL IS USED FOR REAL POSSIBILITIES IN THE PRESENT OR FUTURE. IT IS FORMED BY IF + PRESENT, FUTURE IF I PASS MY EXAM, I WILL HAVE A PARTY. WHAT WORDS COULD WE USE INSTEAD OF IF?

THE FIRST CONDITIONAL IF I PASS MY EXAM, I WILL HAVE A PARTY. WHEN, AS SOON AS, AFTER, AS LONG AS, WHEN REFERRING TO THE FUTURE ALL OF THESE TIME EXPRESSIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED BY THE PRESENT. WHICH MEANS; PRESENT SIMPLE OR PRESENT PERFECT.

THE FIRST CONDITIONAL UNLESS – MEANS IF NOT. THEREFORE, WHEN USING IT, WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO MAKE DOUBLE NEGATIVES. I WON’T HAVE A PARTY UNLESS I PASS MY EXAM.

THE FIRST CONDITIONAL IF + PRESENT, FUTURE IF I PASS MY EXAM, I WILL HAVE A PARTY. IF I PASS MY EXAM, I AM GOING TO HAVE A PARTY. IF I PASS MY EXAM, I AM HAVING A PARTY NEXT WEEKEND.

THE SECOND CONDITIONAL 1.WHAT DO WE USE THE SECOND CONDITIONAL FOR? 2.HOW IS IT FORMED? 3.WHAT HAPPENS TO THE VERB TO BE IN THE SECOND CONDITIONAL?

THE SECOND CONDITIONAL THE SECOND CONDITIONAL IS USED FOR UNREAL SITUATIONS IN THE PRESENT/FUTURE. UNREAL CAN MEAN IMAGINARY, IMPOSSIBLE, UNLIKELY OR IMPROBABLE. IT IS FORMED BY IF + PAST, WOULD + INFINITIVE IF I WON THE LOTTERY, I WOULD TRAVEL THE WORLD.

THE SECOND CONDITIONAL THE SECOND CONDITIONAL IS FORMED BY IF + PAST, WOULD + INFINITIVE

THE VERB TO BE WE TEND TO USE WERE FOR ALL PERSONS IN THE SECOND CONDITIONAL. HOWEVER, WAS IS POSSIBLE IN FIRST AND THIRD PERSONS EXCEPT WHEN GIVING ADVICE. IF I WAS/WERE RICH, I WOULD TRAVEL. IF HE WAS/WERE TALLER, HE COULD PALY BASKETBALL. IF I WERE (NOT WAS) YOU, I WOULD STUDY HARDER.

OTHER EXAMPLES IF I HAD MORE TIME, I WOULD TRAVEL. IF I WAS/WERE IN ENGLAND NOW, I WOULD BE COLD. IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD ATTEND ENGLISH LESSONS.
