Introduction to GPRS  GPRS is a service of GSM mobiles.  GPRS-GENERAL PACKET RADIO SERVICE provides direct link to the internet from GSM phones.  Basically it is used for data trancfer.  GPRS is described as”2.5G”.  GPRS is packet switched.

Throughout Network operators place trial and commercial contracts for GPRS infrastructure. Summer of 2000 First trial GPRS services become available. Typical single user throughput is likely to be 28 kbps. Start of 2001 Basic GPRS capable terminals begin to be available in commercial quantities. Throughout 2001 Network operators launch GPRS services commercially an roll out GPRS. 2001/2002 New GPRS specific applications, higher bitrates, greater network capacity solutions, more capable terminals become available, fueling GPRS usage Typical single user throughput is likely to be 112 kbps. GPRS Phase 2/EDGE begins to emerge in practice. 2002/2003 3GSM arrives commercially. HISTORY

GPRS Service  In GPRS data is billed per kilobytes of information transceived.  Through GPRS only those files can be accessed which are written in XHTML.  The main benefit for users of GPRS is the ‘always on’ characteristic.

GPRS Speed The theoretical limit for packet switched data is approx 170 kbit/sec. Realistic bit rate is kbit/sec.

The maximum data rates are achieved only by allocation of more than one time slot in the TDMA frame.

GPRS MOBILE DEVICES To use GPRS the service is 'dialed' in a similar manner to a standard data call at which point the user is 'attached' and an IP address is allocated. The key use for GPRS is to send and receive data to a computer application such as , web browsing or even telemetry.

Services of GPRS GPRS provides services like  Point-to-point  Point-to-multipoint  SMS  Anonymous services.

GPRS in Practice  Telephone operators prices GPRS relatively cheaply compared to csd.  Typical rates vary wildly, ranging from Euro 1 to Euro 20 per megabyte.  In the US T-mobile offers US$20 per month unlimited GPRS.  Orange in UK offers 1 gigabyte package for 88 per month.

GPRS SECURITY The radio interface is considered to be relatively secure being controlled by the GSM network's security - (SIM card + HLR). Security issues arise when data needs to leave the GPRS network to be delivered to either the Internet or a company LAN. ADVANTAGES OF GPRS GPRS will enable a variety of new and unique services to the mobile wireless subscriber. These mobile applications contain several unique characteristics that enhance the value to the customers. First among them is mobility—the ability to maintain constant voice and data communications while on the move. Second is immediacy, which allows subscribers to obtain connectivity when needed, regardless of location and without a lengthy login session. Finally, localization allows subscribers to obtain information relevant to their current location
