Internet History Began in the 1960’s by the U.S. Military  Huge WAN to connect military with defense contractors  Also used to exchange information to survive attacks Expanded to scientists and educators Now, most common use of the internet is for browsing on the WWW

What is an ISP? ISP: Internet Service Provider Provides access to the internet (for a fee)  Features vary by package purchased (upload/ download speed, number of emails, price etc.) Examples:

Types of Connections 3 of the more common connections are: Dial Up – the modem in your computer uses a standard phone line  Most common is DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) which allows you to “talk & surf” Cable Connection – a cable modem provides connections Wireless – uses radio frequency bands to access the internet

Accessing the Internet Items required to access the Internet:  Computer  Modem  ISP (Internet Service Provider)  Browser Software  Router only required when networking computers

Why is the Internet Slow? Could be attributed to:  Complexity of webpage (graphics, animation etc.)  Speed of your computer  Speed of your connection  Website maintenance  Web page name has changed  Web page has moved

How Does Information Travel? Information is broken down into packets by the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) Routers determine the most efficient path for the packet to travel The Internet Protocol (IP) is responsible for addressing the packets so they know where to go The TCP at the receiving end pieces together the packets that arrive to recreate the original data or message http://www97.intel.com/discover/JourneyInside/TJI_Internet_lesson4/default.aspx

IP Address IP Address: Number that uniquely identifies each computer or device connected to Internet Example: 623.123.44.192

URL URL: Universal Resource Locator Is the unique address for a web page The Domain Name System (DNS) converts the URL into the IP address which the computer can read Hyperlink – leads users to another website or page http://www.mywebaddress.com/people/jane.html Transfer Protocol Host name DomainPath and File Name

Internet vs. Intranet INTRANET Similar to the internet but is only accessible to specific people Ie: employees of an organization Must have a password to access INTERNET A very large WAN Is available to everyone with Internet access

What is a Web Browser? Software necessary to access the Internet Examples Safari Internet Explorer Google Chrome

Search Engine Web site that performs a search of the Internet to find pages matching your search criteria How do they work?  Spider (also called crawler or robot), examines every web page, searching for matches  Results ranked in order of what it believes is most relevant  Different search engines have different results Examples: google, yahoo, ask http://computer.howstuffworks.com/internet/basics/search-engine.htm

Who Controls the Internet? Nobody... But there are organizations that set standards
