6 Changing Face of the Military Formerly Now Draft Total voluntary service Reserve in “Reserve” Reserve is part of operational plan Independent nations All nations are linked G/R* on active duty for extended time G/R units & individuals on repeated deployments G/R is nearly half of total military G/R currently serving in 14 countries About 760,000+ G/R have served on active duty since 9/11/01 Implications *G/R = Guard / Reserve

7 Primary purpose: Protect employment rights of persons who also serve in the uniformed service That is: Protect employees who engage in military service to the same level of seniority, status, pay and benefits that would have accrued, but for the service Uniformed Services Employment & Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA)
