The Five Love Languages

The Five Languages are Words of Affirmation Physical Touch Quality Time Acts of Service Gifts

Words of Affirmation Words of praise – are sincere and praise specifics When results cannot be praised, efforts are Words of Affection – Obviously saying “I love you” is big. Look for synonyms. For teens – should be used in front of family members but not in front of peers.

Physical Touch Timing Place (geographically) Type of touch transitions from childhood to adolescence –As a child you used to? –Now ?

Quality Time Giving a portion of your life. –Togetherness not proximity –Quality Activities –Conversation – guidelines (see handout) –Learning to talk Use I statements Offer reasons Ask questions Consider what is said

Acts of Service How have your parents served you for the past 15+ years? Loving service vs manipulation Do acts that you cannot do for yourself Training is an act of service

Gifts Are not used to manipulate Make the giving a ceremony Does not have to be monetary or material –Making a favourite meal –Coupons –Songs –Flowers, candy etc
