Praise EFFORT not intelligence Look for the positive. Talk to your child about times when you found something difficult but achieved it in the end. Don’t base your expectations for your child on what YOU can or can’t do. Be consistent Failing is part of the learning process

5 Celebrate mistakes! Mistakes are great -they are a way for us to learn. It is the same for your child Tell your chid about mistakes you have made and how you got over them Science is a key area when we look at mistakes : through trial and error new information is found out every day and new inventions made

Have a positive attitude yourself Look for teachable, moments in every day life e.g. shopping Encourage your child to help to solve everyday problems Help to build your child’s coping mechanisms so they don’t give up when they come a cross a problem

10 Role models People have had to work hard, train hard, practise and believe in their own ability to get to where they are today

Praise the strategies they have used The effort made The outcome achieved e.g ‘I'm proud of you for sticking at that task.’ ‘You’re trying really hard at that.’ ‘I love your ideas and enthusiasm.’ ‘You have found a really good way to do that.’ ‘I can tell you have been practising that.’ ‘You have put your shoes on all yourself’

12 Questions we can ask: What did you learn at school today?
Can you tell me a mistake you made to day? What did you learn from your mistake? What made you think hard today?
