Poaching of Rhinos and Elephants Courtney Alber and Ben Ricker

What is Poaching? Poaching is the illegal killing, hunting, or capturing of animals

History of Poaching in Africa Elephants Rhinos In the early 20th century there used to be 3-5 million Elephants in the world. 35,000 Elephants were killed last year. Black Rhinos population has gone down 97.6% since 1960. The number of rhinos poached has increased by 9,000% In 2007 13 rhinos were poached and In 2014 there were 1,215.

Current Statistics for Rhinos and Elephants There are about 300,000 Elephants in Africa today. 100 elephants are killed everyday in Africa. There are around 25,000 rhinos left in Africa today. In the first 4 months of 2015 393 rhinos were killed in Africa. 749 rhinos were killed in 2015.

Reasons for Poaching Rhinos Horns believed to treat fevers, cancer, hangovers -does not work Price: $30,000 per pound Elephants Ivory(tusks) carved into jewelry, utensils, trinkets and religious figurines billiard balls, pool cues, dominos, fans, piano keys Price: $1,000 per pound

Effects of Poaching on Species, the Savanna, and Tourism -affect as many as 3.8 million tourism-sector jobs across Africa, including guides, drivers, and hotel and restaurant staff. The Savanna -White Rhinos are key drivers of ecosystem functioning because they´re not controlled by predation. Species -Nearly 100 elephants are killed every day in Africa. -Elephants will become extinct in 2020 if the rates for killing keep inclining. -Rhinos will also become extinct in 2020 but the rates for killing rhinos have decreased.

Steps to STOP Poaching Recruiting, training, and equipping scouts with advanced technology to help guard animals establishing large areas of land in which animals can move from one park to another educating people to raise awareness of poaching provide alternate means of livelihood to communities who need resources Company's such as Ivory Ella affiliated with Save the Elephants, a nonprofit organization specializing in wildlife conservation of elephants Drones are used to stop elephant and rhino poachers in Africa. Drones used to stop elephant and rhino poachers in Africa

Effectiveness to Stop Poaching Air Shepard's use controlled drones that spot poachers and make it easier for rangers to find them across of Africa's huge landscape. In Africa now if you kill a rhino you are fined $110,000 and sentenced for 10 years in jail. South Africa's Kruger National Park is spending an additional $2,000,000 on protection for rhinos.
