Endangered Species By: Lauren Salvadeo Krissi Koller

What are endangered species? They are species with a population that decreased over a period of time to a very small number. -They are at risk for extinction.

What causes endangerment? Endangerment is a very large issue today and when a species becomes endangered, it has a lot to do with the animal’s habitat and its environment. Habitat Destruction When an animal’s habitat changes at a fast pace, it does not have enough time to adjust. habitat loss- primary cause Humans play a big role in habitat destruction. ex) pollution in waters causes fish to die

Causes Continued Introduction of Invasive Species Native species grew up in a given area and adapted to the environment and the other species living there. Invasive species are introduced to the environment either by accident or intentionally by humans and this may or may not cause a problem. - They could prey on the native animals and out compete them for food and cause the natives to become endangered or extinct. Overexploitation Overexploitation is the rate at which a certain species is used which could lead to endangerment ex) whaling More factors that could cause endangerment: Disease, limited distribution, and pollution

Endangered Species Mountain Gorilla Black Rhino Giant Panda Polar Bear Marine Turtles Elephants Black Spider Monkey Brown Kiwi

Poaching Poaching is when humans illegally kill or capture animals. Ex) capturing an animal without a license. In a country where hunting is an important part of the economy and culture, poaching may occur. - Some countries use animal hide, ivory, horn, teeth, and bones to make products such as jewelry. Some methods of poaching in other countries: snare wires- tied to trees to capture certain animals trap nets- animals are chased towards the net and get caught pitfalls- usually used to capture larger animals Poaching could spread disease ex) Anthrax was spread in Uganda due to people feeding on animals from Queen Elizabeth National Park. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zKDFjAHkes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zKDFjAHkes

What is Being Done? Conserving a habitat Places such as national parks or nature reserves No human interference Reduce + Reuse + Recycle = Better habitat for animals and less endangerment Organizations have been set up through out the world for this cause. Laws have been adopted to regulate import, export and all sales of any endangered species. Other laws are to protect species from various forms of inhumane treatment and poaching. How to stop Poachers Report any suspicion of illegal animal capturing to a FWP’s (Fish, Wildlife & Parks) TIP-MONT program and they could help stop the poachers. 1-800-TIP-MONT.
