Current elephant poaching crisis From community conservancies in Northern Kenya: 89% of elephant deaths outside and 31% inside conservancies due to poaching In Samburu & Laikipia in 2008 & 2010 more than 50% of carcases were due to ivory poaching More than 70 elephants in that area per year killed for ivory How many in the rest of Kenya?

Rhino horn & Ivory markets Market value in China for rhino horn is currently KSH 5.7 million per Kg (up to KSH 40 million per horn) Market value in China for ivory is KSH 120,000 per Kg (KSH 2.4 million for 20Kg tusk) 90% is illegal ivory, prices are 10x the legal ivory prices of 2008

Rhino horn & Ivory trade in Kenya Poachers earn KSH 500,000 + for rhino horn, local dealers earn KSH 1.5 million + Poachers in Samburu District currently earn KSH 5,000 – 8,000 per Kg (KSH 160,000 for 20Kg tusk...x2) In 2009 they earned KSH 3,000 per Kg

What Kenyans are doing In Laikipia landowners invest at least KSH 320,000,000 per year to protect and conserve rhinos, in Kenya much more with KWS & others Kenyan’s put their lives on the line to protect rhinos and elephants And we have the Wildlife Act e.g. Section 56 General Penalties... Fine not exceeding KSH 40,000 and/or imprisonment not exceeding 10 years

What other countries do and say Zambia – life imprisonment for poaching rhino, 15yrs for poaching elephant Namibia –“… Poach a rhino in Namibia and the blood of the people will be on your hands. You will not be poaching a state rhino but will be stealing from our people, depriving whole communities of a livelihood,… we must remain vigilant and work even harder as a team to counteract these evils and protect our national heritage from unscrupulous forces,” Min. of Environment and Tourism Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah
