2 There has been a 76 percent decline in elephant populations since 2002
1,004 rhinos were killed last year for their horns in South Africa alone 20,000 elephants were killed by poachers in the last year in Africa

3 Rhino horn is worth more than gold
Ivory is used to make carvings but it’s main use is in traditional medicines that are sold in Asia Rhino horn is worth more than gold The next slide has some quite horrible pictures of elephants and rhino killed for their tusks. Please look away if you do not want to see it.

5 It is estimated that 96 elephants are killed each day for their ivory in Africa

6 Kenya - elephants Listen to the BBC news clip from February 2014 about elephants in Kenya Answer these questions: How many elephants were there in Kenya 30 years ago? How many are there now? How many years will it be until there are no more wild elephants according to Daphne Sheldrick?

7 Rhino There are 2 types: black (top) and white (bottom)
Black rhino are critically endangered

8 How do we stop it? There are many charities that you can support that put money towards teams of people that stop poaching We should put pressure on governments in Asia to do more to stop the trade of ivory – you can write letters and sign petitions

9 Please read the two articles on rhino poaching and answer these questions:
Read the ‘Black Rhinoceros’ article: what is the difference between a black and white rhino By how much has the population of rhino declined in the last 60 years? What has been done to conserve the rhino? What is still needed (use the article and your own ideas)? Use the graph in the article “Vietnam’s illegal trade in rhino horn” to calculate a) the number of rhinos killed in 2002 and b) the number of rhinos killed in c) What is the percentage increase in poaching? What do people think will start to happen in 2014? Why do people in Asia buy rhino horn? Why is hunting rhino still allowed in South Africa?

10 Prep Find out as much information as you can about rhino and/or elephant poaching in Africa and either 1) draw a poster or 2) write a booklet to persuade people to care more about this important issue
