Web 2.0 Technologies – Background Web 1.0 technology could be described as the read-only web, which was mainly used for publishing information. With Web 1.0 there is little interaction between the user and website, except through ‘Contact Us’ or ‘Membership Enquiry’ type links using email.

Web 2.0 Technologies Web 2.0 technology supports member participation, where they can communicate with the leisure centre by reading from and writing to the website. Members can communicate with and make bookings/purchases from the leisure centre by interacting with the website.

Web 2.0 Technologies Progress Leisure can use Web 2.0 technology to offer the following: Dynamic web content, where the member can: Log on to the website after they have registered Contribute to the leisure centre interactive features Book classes or update their contact details online Video can be included in a blog or website using basic HTML5 code. A dedicated YouTube channel can be set up for members to upload video content. RSS feeds – to keep up to date with the latest changes or content on websites.

Web 2.0 Technologies – Blogs Blogs can be used to provide information to customers and the general public on a regular basis: Information – keeping members informed and helping to motivate them to use the facilities Communication – members can reply to a particular blog post or ask a question; the leisure centre team can then respond and give further information Promotion – social media links can be used to share blogs with friends, which helps to promote the leisure centre Twitter is a microblog with short updates called tweets.

Web 2.0 Technologies – Communication Web 2.0 technologies can be used for communication between the leisure centre and its members. Benefits to Progress Leisure are: Efficiency – online communication is efficient for leisure centre as less staff interaction needed Cost saving – communication using website promotes a more paper-free approach for Progress Leisure Benefits to members are: Availability – members can communicate with the leisure centre at a convenient time for them as the service is available 24/7 Less frustration – members do not have to spend a long time in phone queues or using automated messaging services

Web 2.0 Technologies – Social Media Social networking sites such as Facebook/LinkedIn can be used as follows: The leisure centre can use these sites to keep existing members up to date with class timetables and fitness tips.
