THE LUSITANIA & COURTMACSHERRY LIFEBOAT 100 years By Natalia & Brigid

Facts: Last Voyage Sailing from New York to Liverpool Was carrying 1,962 passengers Captain William Turner

Courtmacsherry R.N.L.I Kezia Gwilt was the Lifeboat in 1915 it was manned by 15 Lifeguards and had oars and a sail. The Coxswain was Timothy Keohan (Patrick Keohan’s father).

Facts: Who sunk it A German U-Boat sank the Lusitania It’s Captain was Walther Schwieger It came within 30 feet of the Lusitania And let off one of four torpedoes

Facts: The Sinking Was hit at 14;10 on May 7 th 1915 There was a second explosion shortly after it was hit. It went down in 18 mins. Was fully submerged at 14:28 Keeled over to Starboard side(right) as it sank.

Facts: The Rescue The Coxswain saw the Lusitania being hit and signalled for the Lifeboat’s crew The Lifeboat was launched at 14:30 Unfortunately there was no wind and they could not use the sails That meant that they had to row the 12 miles out to the site of the sinking This took them 3 ½ hours They were too late to save anybody and had the job of ferrying the corpses to the other liners which had helped save some lives.
