Titanic 100 Years April 14 th,1912-April 14 th, 2012

Did You Know… Titanic was a passenger liner. The boat sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April, 15 th 1912. It collided with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,514 people in one of the deadliest disasters in history. You will learn about these and more.

About the Titanic The Titanic was no ordinary boat. Titanic was over 882 feet long. It was her maiden voyage. She was on sea for a few days before tragedy struck her. She was damaged to an extent of sinking.

Cruising Out of This World Titanic was carrying 2,223 people while 1,517 died. It was her maiden voyage. She was deemed unsinkable. At 11:40pm on the night of April 14, 2012, on a route to New York the Titanic struck the iceberg that would ultimately lead to her sinking less than 3 hours later. At around 2:20am on the morning of April 15 th, Titanic disappeared beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

Human Survival Chart

Of the Dead Over 1,000 people died on the Titanic and few survived. There were survivors who lived long enough to tell their story. Many did just that.

Of the Few Survivors Of those who died there was an architect from Buffalo, NY. This man made a new movie, depicting the story from what happened to him. He described the soundly, deadly experience that he had miraculously lived through, and told the story of how his family did not. This Buffalo resident lost a son and his wife.

A Disastrous Catastrophe (table) Q & A Why (how) did the Titanic sink? What time did the Titanic sink? When was Titanic engulfed completely with water? How many people died on the Titanic? It struck an iceberg, along the “mountain ridge” in the Atlantic Ocean. 11:40pm was when the Titanic hit the iceberg and began to sink. 2:20am on the morning of April 15 th, she vanished beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. When the voyage began the ship held 2,223 people and of those1,517 died. Only 706 people lived.

Images This is a view of the Titanic from the front of the boat. This view is from the back. You can see the people on deck. The Titanic’s side view, shortly after departure. This is an artist’s painting of the Titanic. Illustrator unknown.

Robert Ballard Robert Duane Ballard (born June 30, 1942) is a professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island who is most noted for his work in underwater archaeology. He is most famous his discoveries, one of which was locating the Titanic in 1985.

Titanic Wreckage Photos This picture shows the Titanic deck and shows Alvin’ landing in for discovery. This is the out side of the Titanic. These are windows, both shattered, when not all were! The deck with icicle- like rust sticks. Robert Ballard (see slide 6)called these “rusticles” for their looks. This is Alvin’ at the site of the broken stern of the Titanic. When the ship sunk it spun causing the stern to separate from the rest of the ship. Random wreckage, items that were once in a person possession.

The Stern of Titanic The Titanic started sinking with her front flooding first. Due to this, the stern slowly lifted up, gaining weight. When the front was about 16,000 tons, the stern snapped off, tearing the ship in half. The stern sank under. At bow hits the ocean floor and at the stern hits the ocean floor.

11:35 pm (4/14/12) Look-outs spot the ice-berg 1/4 mile ahead. 11:40 pm Titanic strikes the iceberg damaging nearly 300 feet of the hull. 1:20 am (4/15/12) The bow pitches; water floods through anchor-chain holes. 2:00 The bow continues to submerge; propellers lift out of the water. 2:10 The Titanic tilts 45 degrees or more; the upper structure steel disintegrates. 2:12 The stern raises up out of the water; the bow, filling with water, grows heavier. 2:18 Weighing 16,000 tons, the bow rips loose; the stern rises. 2:56 Falling at about 4 mph, the stern strikes the ocean floor. 2:20 The stern slips beneath the surface. 2:29 Coasting at about 13 mph, the bow strikes the ocean floor.

If the Titanic carried 2,223 people and 1,517 died, how many lived? Show your work. Bow. began 4/14/1912 False. The Titanic began sinking on 4/14/1912. 706 people lived. The Titanic began sinking on 4/15/1912. Is this true or False? The stern fell under the ocean’s surface first. Did the stern or bow hit the ocean first?
