Walter Iooss Jr. By Nick Livingston

Bio Born in Temple, Texas in 1943 Attended German School of Photography in NYC Much of work shown in Sports Illustrated Magazine Sports photography At 16 he took shot his first camera roll at a professional basketball game with a camera his father bought him At 18 years old he got his first assignment from S.I. In 2004 he won the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports Photography

Scott and Templeton, L.A., California 1979 This photo uses natural lighting because it was taken outside. The two players are sitting in the dugout and the photograph is being taken close in front of them, possibly from a squatting or sitting angle. The main subject is the two baseball players sitting on the bench. The photographer is showing the blue dugout back ground with their blue uniforms that match, then their uniforms have red which contrast with the blue to give the photo some flare. The story is probably lying within the game or context of the game. I selected this photo because I love baseball and, the contrasting of the blue and red really makes this photo stand out to me.

Slamdunk88, Chicago 1988 The lighting was artificial, as you can see it was taken inside a basketball arena. It is coming from an upward angle, the shot is almost taken from the ground. There is a flashing light in the back that gives an extra effect, and the lighting makes it clear to see Jordan in the air. Michael Jordan going for the dunk is the main subject. The angle of this photo makes it intriguing, almost making him look like he is jumping higher than he is. The shot is clear and defined to see the subject, with excellent back ground which tells the story of what is going on, and the importance of this moment. I selected this photograph because MJ is the best basketball players ever, and this is an iconic shot.

Brett Favre, Oahu 1994 The lighting is natural, he is positioned outside in some plants. The subject is kneeling down so there is a downward angle on the shot. The lighting is clear since it is outside, there aren’t any major shadows. The main subject of the photo is Brett Favre because he takes pictures of athletes. There is also a deer in the picture. This photo is not necessarily striking there is more of a humor aspect of his clothes and the setting of the photograph. There is good texture to this photo because of the green leaves and the texture of his hat and great definition there is. I picked this photo because it was funny, and Brett Favre is one of my favorite football players.

Jimi Hendrix, NYC 1969 The lighting is inside during a concert, there is a red light that is projecting which makes the whole picture red. The light is coming from the top right of the screen and the picture looks like it being taken from off stage looking up to the subject. The main subject is Hendrix because he is the only thing in the photo. This photo is so striking because it is him in action and the red light with beams coming down hits the subject just right to give it a nice effect. The photographer is trying to show an aspect of Hendrix, perhaps a closer look into his work. I chose this photo because I have respect for Hendrix and the lighting intrigued me, and got me interested in this particular photo.

Orange Bowl, Miami, Florida 1981 The lighting in this photo is natural, it is outside at a football game. The photograph is taken looking into the crowd. This photo is in grayscale so the photo is defined nicely, and it causes you to focus on it. The main focus for me in this photo is the large gentlemen with the cowboy hat in the front. I think he is the subject because he is wearing lots of white and everyone around him has darker colors on. This photo is so striking because the crowd of people, and it appears that there is a story behind this. Since it is in the 80’s there may have been some civil rights context still going on despite much of that happening in the 60’s. I selected this photo because the large man caught my attention and it looked like there was a purpose or story to this photo.
