Dorothea Lange May 26, 1895 – October 11, 1996

Dorothea Lange In 1902 at age seven, Lange had polio. There was no cure for it but she came out of it with a weakened right leg and a dropped foot. In 1907, he father leaves her and her family behind and she never saw him again. Six years later, she graduates from Wadleigh High School in Harlem and moves on to a New York training school for teachers. After school, she received her first job from the famous Arnold Genthe, and that’s how it all started.

Famous Photos This is probably Lange’s most famous picture. It was taken during the depressions While walking through a pea picker’s camp Lange noticed this thirty-two year old woman with her seven children. There was no work and they were living on wild birds caught by the children. She could not move on, she told Lange, because she had sold the tires from her car for food. This photo really shows the hardships of the depression and the physical and emotional pain people went through. Migrant Mother, 1936, 15 3/4" X 20"

Quotes One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you'd be stricken blind. Photography takes an instant out of time, altering life by holding it still. Pick a theme and work it to exhaustion... the subject must be something you truly love or truly hate While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see. While there is perhaps a province in which the photograph can tell us nothing more than what we see with our own eyes, there is another in which it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see

Famous Photos This picture was taken in San Francisco while a man was waiting in the line for his ration of bread. Titled after a San Francisco widow, Lois Jordan, who became known as the "white Angel" when she established a soup kitchen to feed the needy and hungry. Lange would usually take pictures of people who were going through hard times. She didn’t take to many happy pictures. White Angel Bread Line, 1933, h: 14 x w: 11 in / h: 35.6 x w: 27.9 cm

Famous Photos Dorothea Lange worked for the American government’s Farm Security Administration program during the Great Depression of the 1930's. The F.S.A. was set up to relieve poverty in rural areas but also involved photographing conditions faced by displaced farmers who had been hit by the Depression and by drought. That’s how she got the chance to take most of these pictures. Hoe Culture, 1936 6 1/2 x 13 1/8 inches

Famous Photos The I AM AN AMERICAN sign appeared on December 8, 1941, on a grocery store in Oakland, California, one day after Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan. The owner of the store was a Japanese American and graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. I am an American, 1941

Famous Photos Lange's "Migratory Children Living in 'Rambler's Park'" was taken in 1939, in Yakima Valley, Wash. She would mostly just take pictures where ever she was. She would ask the people if she could photograph them. When they said sure, she would walk around until they forgot she was there so she could get a real picture., 1939

Favorite Picture This is my favorite photograph by Dorothea Lange. I like how the house takes up the whole picture and how there’s a lot going on. There is also a lot of texture in this picture. I also like how this people in this picture are so laid back and it just looks like it’s a slow day at the gas station. Crossroads 400 x 290 - 35k - jpg 1939
