Some Thoughts on Delegation Many people think of delegation in a “less than positive” mindset. This is faulty thinking Delegation is much more than dumping work on others

WHY DELEGATE? To develop the skills and abilities of others To get more accomplished To get better results To save time To avoid performing boring or unpleasant tasks

What is Delegation? Delegate - to entrust (authority, power, etc.) to a person acting as one’s agent or representative New World Dictionary

Becoming a Delegator THREE STEPS TO BECOMING A DELEGATOR 1. Attitude 2. Habit 3. Techniques

Some Jobs Should Not Be Delegated Rituals Policy Making Resolution of Disputes Specific Personnel Matters Evaluations Discipline Praise Crises

Barriers to Effective Delegation Lack of confidence in others Inability to communicate with others Will need to train people Like doing certain jobs myself

More Barriers... Has to be done right now, this instance Don't want to be thought of as tyrant Want credit for the results Want perfectionism

More Barriers... Fear subordinate will fail Need to be in control Fear someone else can do the job better Doesn't know how to delegate

Approved Practices in Delegation Determine what is to be delegated Determine to whom you will be delegating

Approved Practices... Communicate with the delegate (first consider how, when, and where) Why I am delegating Why you were chosen What should be accomplished

Approved Practices... Clarify the delegate 's scope of authority Specify if confidentiality is involved Tell the delegate if others will be involved

Approved Practices... Communicate: Identify time constraints Provide appropriate cautions and reminders Discuss the issue of redelegation Determine if progress reports will be required

Prepare the delegate for the delegation (teach)

Approved Practices... Provide feedback to the delegate Let the delegate make decisions Give credit where it is due

Approved Practices Delegate both the good and bad Delegate gradually Delegate in advance Delegate the whole job if possible
