Presentation transcript:

Australia’s most popular mammal, the koala has a very special diet, it only eats leaves of the Eucalyptus tree. The koala has very long claws, that are as sharp as knives which makes it a good climber. The koala gets most of its moisture from its food and so rarely drinks water, hence it’s aboriginal name koala which means, “no drink’! Koala’s love to sleep, high up in the Eucalyptus trees in the heat of the afternoon.

Australia’s most well known mammal the kangaroo, bounds along on it’s enormous back legs, using it’s strong tail to balance. The male red kangaroo has been known to leap over 9 m in a single leap. Often found in the dry outback areas of Australia. Often timid, the kangaroo can be dangerous and when cornered it may pummel its attacker with its forepaws and slash with its powerful hind legs. The tough hide is often covered with soft, woolly fur.

The platypus is one of Australia’s most intriguing animals. It’s bill is made of a framework of bone covered with skin. When swimming under water the platypus shuts it’s eyes and uses it’s very sensitive bill to probe for food. The platypus is a very shy animal and can stay under water for up to five minutes.

The Tasmanian Devil has an eerie snarl and black markings. They have strong jaws and teeth that can even crush bones. It will eat all of it’s prey, until nothing is left. The Tasmanian Devil is a very shy creature and is very rarely seen in the wild.

The hairy-nosed wombat avoids the heat of the day by burrowing deep underground. It has long claws that are adapted for digging and lives in burrows, that can be up to 30 m long. The young are born singly once a year, and are carried in the mother's pouch for about six months. The wombat comes out at night to feed on grasses and other plants, it can go without water for months!
