What should Restorative Justice do?

What is Empathy?  Identify some emotions that describe heartache.  Identify some circumstances that can cause heartache.

Do you have EMPATHY?  Emotional Empathy is actually feeling the way another person feels.  The person knows that you are “with them” and they are not alone.

Let’s test our Empathy level!  3. I pay attention to my personal needs.  4. I can accept compliments.  5. I try to be open to the realities of another person. 1.I know who I am, and everything I do represents who I AM NOW. 2.I love Me.

Restorative Justice is community building

 Using Affective Statements—improves students’ emotional literacy…Students gain a greater understanding of emotions and the feelings of others.  “I feel_______(emotion),when_________ (the occurrence).”  “I feel_______ (the emotion), when__________  (the occurrence) because________ (the reason).

Student Examples of: Affective Statements  I feel good when people appreciate my help because it makes me feel helpful.  I feel happy when my classmates listen to me because it actually makes me feel important.  I feel awesome when my classmates like me because I know I am not alone.  I feel happy when my classmates listen to my perspective because they are listening to my opinion or what I need to say.

Restorative Justice Guiding Principles:  A way of thinking and responding to conflict…it is concerned with making things as right as possible for all involved.  It promotes that school communities work cooperatively and constructively with Conflict at the earliest possible time before it escalates.

Restorative Questions Restorative Conversations  Restorative questions lead to Restorative conversations which take place between a teacher and a student, or an adult staff member and a student, following an incident that caused concern to one or more people.  1. What happened?  2. What were you thinking at the time of the incident?  3. What have you thought about since?  4. Who has been affected by what happened and how?  5. What about this has been the hardest for you?  6. What do you think needs to be done to make things as right as possible?
