Relationships

Relationships are the bonds formed between people based on common interests, and often, on affection. People who you have relationships with share your experiences, both your pleasures and your pain. Relationships are based on reciprocity - giving and receiving. You can't really have a relationships with someone who doesn’t not have a relationship with you. Nor can you have an effective relationship in which one person is doing all the giving, and the other person is doing all the receiving.

Effective relationships begin with rapport - the feeling of being comfortable in each other's company. You are comfortable with people who accept you for who you are, who tolerate your ideas, interests, and who can be happy for you. A commitment of time and energy is required from both people to have a successful relationship. You may have to compromise in order to achieve your goals in the relationship.

Friendships are a major source of enjoyment for teenagers, discussing your opinions, thoughts, and feelings with your friends helps you to clarify your ideas. Friendships are also the number one problems for teens. Friends encourage you to try new activities and argue other points of view to challenge your thinking.

Belonging to a group of friends meets your need to be accepted by others, and helps your develop a greater understanding of your own emotions and develop empathy by sharing the feelings of others. Because friends are concerned about each other's welfare, you will feel cared for and secure. You will contribute to your friends' sense of love and security. Mutual acceptance and mutual support enable you to spend time co-operatively with others in the group.

Good friends show their respect for you by expressing their own point of view, even though it may be different from yours. This comfortable give and take supports your self-esteem and with rapport, you can share both good and bad times without tension. The foundation of any relationship is ___________. You believe that the other person will not betray, reject, or hurt you.

This person will handle your feelings with care in order not to hurt you, not reveal confidential info, and stand up for you when you are not there. Friends should "be there for each other". Your friendships will not be to the same degree with all your relationships. As friendships develop over time, you become more willing to give without always expecting something back.
